Lithops is a genus of succulent plants whose name is derived from Ancient Greek referring to the stone-like appearance which prevents it from being fed on by animals. It is found in the deserts of Namibia and South Africa and is accustomed to blazing sun and extremely dry climates. It requires little water and only in the summer. During the winter months, as it is growing new leaves inside the plant, it uses the nutrients from the olds leaves while the roots are in dormancy. Watering this time will shock and kill the plant. It's unique appearance makes it a great addition to any succulent garden.
