Echinocactus platyacanthus is sometimes known as the giant barrel cactus. In nature, this slow-growing species can reach sizes up to 2.5 tall and 1.5 m wide and can live over a hundred years. This species changes in appearance completely over the course of its lifetime. It starts its life as a powdery blue orb, sometimes with purple striations.
